With the release of this new stamp in 2019, the United States Postal Service (USPS) commemorates the American flag, which is the most iconic symbol of the nation. The stamp marks the 150th anniversary of the first U.S. stamps to feature the image of Old Glory. These stamps were the 10¢ yellow and 30¢ ultramarine & carmine Eagle, Shield, and Flags Pictorial issues of 1869 (Scott 116 & 121).
The horizontally-formatted Forever stamp showcases a captivating photographic image taken by USPS art director Antonio Alcalá. The image depicts the U.S. flag proudly waving atop flagpoles near the end of Chicago’s Navy Pier. The photograph captures a lively May breeze that adds movement and dynamism to the scene.
This stamp serves as a tribute to the enduring significance of the American flag and its representation of the values and ideals of the United States. It is a visual reminder of the country’s rich history and the patriotism of its people.
